A SAILOR DUO ON BOARD
The Polaris crew has expanded by welcoming two new recruits on board, a diver duo that’s waterproof to depths of 300 m and with one featuring the notification system for which the prestigious watchmaker is famed.
In watchmaking, the middle of the 20th century was marked by a turning point in the field of dive watches, where some could deal with immersions down to depths of 100 m. In this quest for waterproofness, Jaeger-LeCoultre made a name for itself in 1959 with its Memovox, an automatic model boasting a mechanical alarm. In 1968, it was the turn of the Memovox Polaris, equipped with a rotating inner bezel and a triple caseback, to see the light of day. Today, this family of watches which has become a fully-fledged collection welcomes two new automatic pieces on board, waterproof to depths of 300 m, Polaris Mariner Date and Polaris Mariner Memovox.
Although both host a 42 mm-diameter steel case, the Memovox version stands out rapidly with its three crowns whereas the Date variation only has two: the 1st (at 2 o’clock) is for setting the alarm by turning the central disc and positioning the orange-edged triangle opposite the time desired, the 2nd (at 3 o’clock) controls the inner bezel and the 3rd (at 4 o’clock) looks after traditional winding and time setting.
On the ocean-hued dial enhanced with three finishes to distinguish between displays, the conical indexes and Arabic numerals are center staged, coated with blue-emitting white Super-LumiNova®, as is the date at 3 o’clock.
The Polaris Mariner Memovox is driven by the modern-day version of the 956 caliber which delivers a power reserve of 45 hours whilst the Polaris Mariner Date with its 899 caliber offers some 70 hours autonomy.
