PROVEN PRECISION
Since 2009, this timepiece has paid homage to marine chronometers. This limited edition piece featuring a white gold case upholds the spirit and design of these precision instruments.
As any good dictionary will tell you, chronometry is all about “the measuring of time.” At the end of the 19th century, specific tools for this were carried on board ships to help them determine their position on the open sea. In the town of Glashütte in Germany, watchmakers crafted marine chronometers whose accuracy was certified by the Hamburg Naval Observatory. Contemporary watchmaking still requires watches to be certified in order to be considered chronometers. There are specific organizations to verify their accuracy. Glashütte Original is certified by the German Calibration Service (DKD). This standard requires that the watch be adjustable to the nearest second and that the movement to be tested is entirely mounted in the case.
To meet these requirements, the new version of the Senator Chronometer combines extreme legibility of the time data with reliable and robust mechanics. The dial design is inspired by historical marine chronometers, with a small seconds hand at 6 o’clock and a power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock. At 3 o’clock, the panorama date changes at precisely midnight in the blink of an eye. The pear-shaped blued steel hour and minute hands sweep around a dial punctuated by delicate Roman numerals.
Housed in a 42mm-diameter white gold case, the manual winding movement 58-03 has a second stop/reset function, which pauses the time display, resets the seconds display to zero and freezes it in this position when the crown is pulled out. At the same time, the minute hand moves to the next full minute. When the crown is turned to set the time, the minute hand jumps from one full minute to the next, guaranteeing the correct relationship between the minutes and seconds displayed.
